The salvage of Rena, which ran aground on a reef off Tauranga, New Zealand, in 2011, has cost NZD500 million (USD317.2 million). This makes the container vessel the second most expensive shipwreck in history after the USD1 billion Costa Concordia salvage operation, owner Daina Shipping Co testified at hearings in Tauranga. After four years of salvage operations, Daina Shipping has applied to the Bay of Plenty Council to leave the remains of the 47,000-tonne vessel on the Otaiti (Astrolabe) Reef.

Capsized Eastern Star

After the Eastern Star(Dongfangzhixing) cruise ship capsized in the Yangtze River killing 434 people, China has been dealing with grieving families and angry locals mourning the victims by burning incense and paper money along the river. A 60-person team has been formed to investigate the accident.204 bodies from Eastern Star identified by DNA matching. The ship was built in the 60’s by Chongqing Eastern Shipping Corp. The list of passengers has not been released to the public.

A recent retrofit, passenger cabin doors that led directly out to the ship’s deck were sealed shut and turned into windows made the Eastern Star more dangerous and prone to capsizing.

Feeling in the dark: the difficult search for signs of life on the Eastern Star

Conditions on the Yangtze and the state of the ship set this disaster apart from others

The Eastern Star’s rapid and complete submersion in a muddy waterway has slowed search efforts, making the recovery operation more difficult than those of other major shipping disasters, experts say.

Just 14 survivors have been rescued since the vessel went down on Monday night with 456 people on board.

In the MV Sewol disaster in South Korea last year more than 170 of the 476 passengers and crew made it out alive.

And of the 4,200 people on board the Costa Concordia, wrecked off the coast of Italy in 2012, only 32 died.
