The sixty-five foot cruiser, Leviathan II, operated by Jamie’s Whale Watching, with 27 whale watchers aboard went down near Tofino on the coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre is searching around Plover Point. Plover Point is a popular area to watch sea lions, but there are rocks nearby that must be avoided. BC Ambulance Service confirms three fatalities. Two patients were flown to critical care hospitals. Four were driven to hospitals and five are recuperating at home. The exact number of those missing is unknown. The boat sank near Plover Reefs, west of Vargas Island and northwest of Tofino.
The cargo ship that was last heard from on Thursday morning has sunk, but Coast Guard officials are holding out hope that they can find the 33 crew members who were on board. The container ship, called El Faro, was en route from Jacksonville, Florida, to San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it went missing.
There is still no sign of Sea Star Lines’El Faro cargo ship, last heard from around 7:20 a.m. Thursday. 28 Americans were aboard when it went missing during Hurricane Joaquin. Families anxiously wait for news of their loved ones. Coast Guard is combing weather-ravaged waters for the 735-foot vessel which disappeared between Jacksonville and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

On Friday, the Coast Guard deployed Coast Guard Cutter Northland, MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew forward deployed in Great Inagua, Bahamas and HC-130 Hercules airplanes from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Florida to search for the El Faro

Search operations were suspended overnight on Friday and resumed at first light Saturday morning October 3. Statement from TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico Regarding the Current Situation with El Faro
Jacksonville, FL (October 2, 2015) – Tim Nolan, President of TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico issued the following statement regarding the current situation with the El Faro.
“On September 29, the El Faro, one of TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico’s two ships departed Jacksonville en-route to San Juan Puerto Rico. At the time of the El Faro’s departure, the vessel’s officers and crew were monitoring what was then Tropical Storm Joaquin. As of 720am EST on Thursday October 1, TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico lost all communication with the El Faro. The US Coast Guard was immediately notified and since then we have been unable to reestablish communication. There are a number of possible reasons for the loss of communications among them the increasing severity of Hurricane Joaquin.
TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico’s primary concern is for the safety and well-being of the 33 individuals on board. We are working to ensure clear and frequent communications with their families and loved ones as we learn more.
We have reached out to the families of those impacted and have established open lines of communication to provide them with timely updates. Our thoughts and prayers are with the individuals and their families.
TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard and all available resources to establish communication by whatever means possible.”
Francesco Schettino , former captain of the Costa Concordia cruise liner appealed his 16-year sentence.
A court in Grosseto found Schettino guilty of multiple manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning his passengers.
A year after the wreck the Costa Concordia left its waters, the picture-perfect Italian island is struggling to stay afloat economically. If you had asked anyone on this Tuscan island last July what life would be like without the Costa Concordia shipwreck, you likely would have heard it would be better without the hulking cruise ship slumped on its shores. Now the residents of this picture-perfect paradise now kind of miss the massive wreck.
The Kim Nirvana, a Philippine ferry was a motor banca, a large canoe-shaped boat. Today it rolled to one side when it reversed course after backing out of Ormoc pier, and capsized, killing at least 38 of those aboard the 33-tonne, wooden-hulled vessel. There were officially 173 passengers and 16 crew members aboard.
It sank fast. By afternoon, only a small section of the underbelly could be seen above water. As rescuers found passengers clinging to the hull and swimming for land, they pulled survivors from the sea and carried them ashore in rubber dinghys. They are continuing to search the deep water where this happened 656 feet from the shore.
At least 118 survivors have been rescued. There are perhaps 38 dead and 33 missing , but the numbers are changing. EMTs put the injured on stretchers; 53 were hospitalized. Over two dozen passengers walked home. Relatives of the missing are standing by.
Kim Nirvana’s destination was Pilar Island. Authorities wonder how the accident happened in calm waters, Was the ferry Unbalanced? Overbooked? navigational error? The investigation will tell.
The Coast Guard is responding to a 286-foot cruise ship that hit a wall in the Eisenhower Lock in the Saint Lawrence Seaway in Massena, New York, Thursday night.The vessel remains in the lock, where the water has been drained, while response crews remove injured passengers. There were 274 people, including passengers and crew, aboard at the time of the collision. At 9:45 p.m., a search-and-rescue controller at Coast Guard Sector Buffalo received notification of the collision. A crew aboard a 25-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station Alexandria Bay, New York, responded along with a marine inspector from Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Massena.
The ship will remain in the lock with both doors closed until it can be moved to different location. The Saint Laurent is a cruise ship owned by International Shipping Partners.
After the Eastern Star(Dongfangzhixing) cruise ship capsized in the Yangtze River killing 434 people, China has been dealing with grieving families and angry locals mourning the victims by burning incense and paper money along the river. A 60-person team has been formed to investigate the accident.204 bodies from Eastern Star identified by DNA matching. The ship was built in the 60’s by Chongqing Eastern Shipping Corp. The list of passengers has not been released to the public.
A recent retrofit, passenger cabin doors that led directly out to the ship’s deck were sealed shut and turned into windows made the Eastern Star more dangerous and prone to capsizing.
