Are Captains who abandon ship breaking the law?

The captain of the South Korean ferry that sank with hundreds of high school students aboard is under criminal investigation for his actions, but it’s not clear whether he broke any laws by being one of the first people off the crippled boat.

While the “captain goes down with his ship” is considered a law of the sea, it’s really more just a guideline, experts say.

Lee Joon-seok, 69, climbed onto one of the first lifeboats to launch from the ship just a half an hour after reporting an accident.

Costa Concordia disaster: five jailed, Captain Schettino still on trial

Four Costa Concordia crew members and a company official have been sentenced to jail in Italy for their part in the 2012 cruise ship disaster that killed 32 people. The five received sentences of between 18 and 34 months for multiple manslaughter, negligence and shipwreck, in exchange for pleading guilty. None of the five are likely to be jailed as the sentences of under two years were suspended and the longer ones may be replaced with house arrest or community service, lawyers said. “I think that the sentences are not enough,” said Robert Fehrer, 28, whose brother Szandor, a violinist, died in the disaster.
