The captain of the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia, which ran aground killing 32 people, said he was distracted shortly before the collision. In a TV interview with Italy’s Canale 5, Francesco Schettino described the accident and said he was distracted by a phone conversation just before the ship crashed into a reef off an Italian island and capsized.

Another lawsuit has been filed in the aftermath of the Costa Concordia tragedy, this time against Carnival Corp. & PLC, owner of the ill-fated cruise ship that capsized this year, killing 32. The latest suit alleges that design faults on the Concordia hampered its evacuation, making it slow and problematic, according to a CBS report. The suit, filed in a California court by Mississippi lawyer John Arthur Eaves, is seeking a minimum of $10 million for two unidentified plaintiffs, plus punitive damages.

An engine room fire on the Costa Allegra knocked out the ship’s main power supply in the Indian Ocean on Monday, leaving it adrift with more than a thousand people on board — including 13 Canadians — in waters vulnerable to pirate attacks.
