Australian cruise industry resists wave of bad press

The cruise industry has played down the impact of recent negative publicity caused by a spate of gastrointestinal illness at sea and the lingering spectre of the Costa Concordia.

Just three weeks ago, Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas made headlines as more than 600 of its passengers and crew were struck by norovirus during a 10-day Caribbean cruise.

Within days, that incident was followed by another aboard Princess Cruises’ Caribbean Princess, with more than 160 of its 3,104 passengers falling ill.

Both episodes made headlines, with comparisons being drawn with last year’s infamous “poop cruise” aboard Carnival Triumph.

Next steps for the Concordia

Time is running short for the next act in the Costa Concordia saga.

Italian authorities have given the go-ahead for marine salvage companies to try to tip the massive ship up off its sloped resting spot and onto a platform shelf constructed on the seabed. Once vertical, workers will be able to weld caissons onto the starboard side that will be used to refloat the ship.

The tipping maneuver, called parbuckling, may be the trickiest part of the entire operation. And despite gaining approvals, the salvage companies may yet hold off on the operations.

Delays have been the rule rather than the exception in righting the Concordia. Initially the ship was to have been raised and towed away in January, a date that slipped to March and then to September.

Grounded ship Costa Concordia is expected to be raised into an upright position in September.

No official date has been set by the Italian authorities or by the two companies – Titan Salvage and Micoperi – that were awarded the recovery project, CBS News reports.

The ship ran aground off the island of Giglio on January 13 last year.

The severity of the Costa Concordia shipwreck was chiefly due to the “unconventional behavior” of its captain and weak emergency management, an Italian safety agency has concluded. The findings of the Italian Marine Casualties Investigative Body are part of a definitive 176-page report on the 2012 accident. While it did not absolve Costa Cruises’ shoreside oversight, the report said Capt. Francesco Schettino lied about the extent of damages to authorities.
